Uses of Seaweeds

For those living in the coastal areas, seaweeds are common sights that they see every day. The vast existence of seaweeds near seashores is due to the active growing nature of this aquatic plant. This is especially true in areas whose climate match with the needs of seaweeds for abundant growth. These are often areas with warm climates and provide sufficient amount of sunlight which the seaweeds need to make their own food.

 

Throughout the centuries, seaweeds have been a part of the life and culture to people in coastal areas. In addition to fishes, shellfishes, clams, and other sea foods; seaweeds are delectable sources of nutrition for individuals. Because of this seaweed has already been cultivated since then and this practice have become wider in these days. Seaweed offers considerable advantage to people and is used in many industries.

Aside from the usual seaweed dishes that are favorites of many culture across the world, seaweeds are also used in addition to other food products. One of the most common food product from seaweed is the agar- agar gelatin that is loved by many. Seaweeds are often combined or used as additives in various food items because of its very high nutritional value. It contains high amounts of iodine, sodium, and other trace vitamins and minerals that are essential for the human body. Various cultures have different uses for seaweeds; there are those who make it as an added ingredient to bread, while there are some who mix them with other substances to make excellent beverages.

 

Seaweed Use in Medicine

 

A kind of seaweed called alginates is widely used in dressing wounds and creating dental moulds. Seaweed is also being used as a sources of iodine for people who have thyroid problems like goiter. These plants are also known to have healing properties for various health problems like tuberculosis, arthritis, influenza and colds, and manifestation of words. They are also seen as potential cure for tumors. Seaweeds are also used in other areas like skin care regimens, diet pills, and several others.

 

Use of Seaweeds in Other Industries

 

The use of seaweeds in other industries also occupies a very wide range of products that are used in the daily lives of people. These plants are used as fertilizers and are being considered as a potential source of bioethanol. Seaweeds are also used as ingredients in products like toothpastes, cosmetic and paints. Other products that have seaweed ingredients are dyes, gels, adhesives, paper coatings and may others.
